Used gear is one of the best ways to get on the mountain for less. A lot of great equipment has plenty of life left in it. Here is what to look for so you know exactly what you are getting.
Cosmetic vs. functional damage
Cosmetic damage like topsheet scratches, chips and scuffs does not affect how a ski or board rides. Some skis, especially Head models, may have topsheet damage that has been sealed with epoxy. That is a repair, not a problem.
Functional damage is what to watch for:
- Base damage: small scratches are normal. Deep gouges that go through to the core (core shots) need repair.
- Edges: surface rust usually tunes out. Cracked or missing edge sections are a bigger issue.
- Delamination: layers separating along the sidewall or at the tip and tail.
Ski bindings
Bindings are safety equipment. Manufacturers publish lists of bindings that shops are allowed to adjust and test, and older bindings eventually come off those lists. Buying skis and bindings from a shop means the bindings can be adjusted to your boot and release settings by a technician.
Ski boots and snowboard boots
Check that the liner is not too packed out, all buckles, straps, laces or BOA dials work, and the soles are not worn down. For ski boots, make sure the sole type (alpine, GripWalk or touring) is compatible with your bindings.
Snowboard bindings and insert patterns
Make sure used bindings fit your board's insert pattern. Many older Burton boards and bindings use the Burton 3D pattern.
What final sale means
Some of our used items are marked FINAL SALE - SOLD AS IS - NO RETURNS OR EXCHANGES. These are items with more wear that are still very usable, priced as a great deal. Final sale items are not eligible for returns, exchanges or our No Hassle Returns option, so check the condition notes and photos on each listing before you buy.
