How to Size Kids Skis and Ski Boots

Getting the right size gear is the biggest thing you can do to help a young skier learn faster and have more fun. Here is a simple guide to sizing kids skis, boots and poles, plus a few tips for keeping up with growing kids without breaking the bank.

Kids ski length

Stand the ski up next to your child (in their boots, if you can) and look at where the tip lands:

  • First-timers and beginners: between the chest and the chin. Shorter skis are easier to turn and stop.
  • Confident, progressing skiers: between the chin and the nose.
  • Advanced or aggressive young skiers: around the nose or a little taller.

Weight matters too. A lighter child can go a bit shorter, and a heavier or more athletic child can go a bit longer. When in doubt, go shorter, because a ski that is too long is much harder for a kid to control.

Kids ski boot size

Ski boots are sized in mondopoint, which is simply the length of the foot in centimeters. Have your child stand on a piece of paper with their heel against a wall, mark the longest toe, and measure. That number is roughly their mondopoint size.

  • The boot should feel snug. Toes can lightly touch the front when standing straight, and pull back slightly when they bend their knees.
  • Do not buy more than about one size up to grow into. A boot that is too big lets the foot slide around, which makes skiing harder and can cause cold feet and blisters.
  • Have them wear one thin pair of ski socks, never two pairs or cotton socks.

Kids ski poles

Many young beginners learn without poles, and that is completely fine. Once they are ready, flip a pole upside down and have them grip it just under the basket. Their elbow should be at about a 90 degree angle.

Save money as they grow

Kids can outgrow skis and boots every season or two. Buying used kids skis and used kids ski boots is an easy way to keep them in the right size for less. You can also shop new kids skis and new kids ski boots, and do not forget a helmet and goggles.
