Snowboard Size Guide: How to Choose Board Length, Boots and Bindings

The right size snowboard makes learning easier and riding more fun. Here is how to choose your board length and width, and how to make sure your boots and bindings fit together.

Snowboard length

A quick starting point: stand the board on its tail. For most riders, the nose should land somewhere between your chin and your nose. Then adjust:

  • Weight matters most. Each brand publishes a size chart with a recommended rider weight range for every length. If you are heavier for your height, size up; lighter, size down.
  • Beginners and park riders often prefer a slightly shorter board because it is easier to turn and spin.
  • Powder and freeride riders often prefer a slightly longer board for float and stability at speed.
  • Kids: a board that lands between the chest and the chin is a good place to start.

Snowboard width

If your toes and heels hang too far over the edges, they can drag in the snow when you turn. Riders with larger feet, roughly men's size 11 and up, should look at a wide board.

Snowboard boots

Boots should fit snug. When you stand straight, your toes should lightly touch the front of the boot, and when you bend your knees they should pull back slightly. Your heel should stay down without lifting much. Choose from traditional laces, quick-pull laces or BOA dials, whichever you find easiest. Shop adult snowboard boots and kids snowboard boots.

Snowboard bindings

Bindings come in sizes matched to boot size, so check the brand's chart. Also check that your bindings work with your board's insert pattern. Most boards use a 4x4 or 2x4 pattern or a channel system. Many older Burton boards and bindings use the Burton 3D pattern, so double check before mixing brands. Shop snowboard bindings.
